Register for STARS Winter/Spring 2008 Classes

Registration is open now for Winter-Spring 2008 classes at the Soo Theatre Arts Resource Studios (STARS).

The new term begins January 7 and concludes May 17. Classes, workshops, and lessons for children, teens, and adults are offered in dance, music, acting, visual arts, and yoga. Brochures listing class times and tuition fees are available at STARS or on the website at sootheatre.org.

Interested students should register in person at the STARS office weekdays 10 to 7. The STARS office will be closed Dec. 22-Jan. 1.

Class offerings in dance for new students include Movement & Dance, Pre-Ballet, Ballet I, Beginning Ballet/Jazz A-B, and Ballroom dance.

All dance classes are taught by Dianna George.

David Rhinard will be teaching Acting for grades 6-10 and Acting for grades 11-adult.

Karen Hughes will be teaching Tunes for Toddlers for preschool children with parent, Young Singer Vocal Class for children grades 1-5, and Teen/Adult Voice Class.

A new series of Handmade Book Workshops for children grades 2-5 will be taught by Linda Whitetree Warrington.

Lee Carlson will be offering yoga classes for adults.

Private lessons will be available in violin, viola, cello, flute, clarinet, recorder, trumpet, French horn, trombone, voice, harp, and piano.

Nancy Powers will also offer Suzuki violin instruction for children ages 3 and older.

STP Presents "A STARS Candlelight Christmas" on Dec 2

The Soo Theatre Project will present “A STARS Candlelight Christmas” on Sunday, December 2, 3 pm. at St. Mary’s Pro-Cathedral, 320 E. Portage Ave., Sault Ste. Marie, MI.

This second annual concert by the Soo Theatre Arts Resource Studios (STARS) will feature the Singers United Community Choir, Youth Orchestra, Lake Superior State University Chorus with STARS voice students, Flute Choir, Harp Ensemble, Recorder Consort and the “Not Quite Ready for Prime Time” Players. Suggested donation is adults $5, children $3 and family $12. Donations will benefit the STARS Music Department.

Directors leading this program are Dottie Case (youth orchestra), Michael Drumheller (Singers United), Karen Hughes (harp ensemble and LSSU chorus), Jennifer Parker (recorder consort), Nancy Powers (“Not Quite Ready for Prime Time” Players) and Meg Stevens (flute choir.)

STARS is a community arts center offering instruction in music, dance, theater, visual arts and yoga for students of all ages. STARS is a program of the Soo Theatre Project, housed in the historic Soo Theatre complex. For more information on classes and lessons, call the STARS office, 632-1930.

STARS Holds Benefit Flea Market, Bottle Drive

Two benefit activities are planned to benefit Soo Theatre Project's STARS program.

The first is a flea market sale on November 3rd at the Soo Theatre.

The second is a bottle and can drive from now until Thanksgiving. This drive will provide funds for an educational field trip for the adult and teen ballet classes on Thanksgiving weekend. Please bring your returnable bottles, returnable cans, or cash to the STARS office to help with expenses.

New STARS Classes to Start October 29

New seven-week classes in dramatic arts and yoga will begin October 29 at Soo Theatre Arts Resource Studios (STARS), 534 Ashmun St., Sault Ste. Marie, MI.

Speech and Dramatic Arts Classes

Speech and Dramatic Arts for children grades 3-6, taught by Dottie Case, will meet Thursdays 4:30-5:30 pm. Tuition is $70. Students will develop stories into reader’s theater.

Yoga Classes

Morning yoga classes will meet Tuesday and/or Thursday 9-10:30 am. Tuition is $77 for one class and $140 for both classes.

Lunch hour yoga will meet Monday and/or Wednesday 12:10-1 pm. Tuition is $63 for one class and $112 for both classes.

An evening yoga class will meet Thursdays 5:30-7:00. Tuition is $77 for this class.

Led by Lee Carlson, all yoga classes are open to beginners as well as those experienced in yoga.
