New at STARS! Junior Choir Starts February 6

Soo Theatre Arts Resource Studios (STARS) is very excited to announce the addition of a Junior Choir to their offerings!

Karley McKee will be directing this group that will be comprised of children ages 7 and above on Monday afternoons from 4:30-5:30. The introductory cost is only $25 and the choir will run February 6th-May 7th. They will also perform in the STARS Mother’s Day concert on May 13th.

STARS Offers Pickford Classes January 30

Soo Theatre Arts Resource Studios (STARS) is very excited to announce that they will be offering select classes in Pickford starting the week of January 30th!

Mary Witucki will be teaching Dance for 5-15y/o, Randy Krause will return to teach Watercolor Painting for Grades K-Adult, and Dave Bigelow will join the group to teach Drawing for Grades 6-Adult. All classes will be held at Pickford Schools in the after school hours.

Kids' Music Workshop with Switchback July 22

Do you have a child interested in music? The Soo Theatre will have a special “Music is a Family” workshop with singer/songwriters Switchback on July 22nd at 3pm.

This informative presentation is geared towards 11-18 year olds. These two incredibly talented performers will introduce your children to common elements shared between all forms of music. There will be demonstrations of a variety of instruments including the mandolin, bass guitar, and percussion boards. The presentation will be approximately 45 minutes long with a 15 minute question and answer session. Admission is only $5.

New Dance & Music Classes!

STARS (Soo Theatre Arts Resource Studios) will be presenting an 8-week Beginning Group Piano class with instructor Ronda McGreevy beginning January 31, 2011 at Karen Hughes Beacom’s music studio in Pickford. Classes will be offered from 5:00-5:45pm for 8-10-year-olds, 6:00-6:45pm for 11-13-year-olds, and 7:00-7:45pm for 14-18-year-olds.

Dance instructor Courtney Bailey has returned to STARS to teach intermediate and advanced Acro Dance classes, as well as intermediate and advanced Lyrical/Jazz on Wednesday evenings in the STARS dance studios. These new classes will begin January 26th.

New STARS Music Classes

STARS (Soo Theatre Arts Resource Studios) has expanded class offerings in their Music Program.

First Steps in Music will be offered on Monday’s starting in February from 11-11:30am for 2-3 year olds and from 11:30-12pm for 4-5 year olds. Taught by Karen Hughes, the students will participate in engaging musical activities designed to stimulate their artistic senses.

STARS is pleased to announce that they will be offering additional 5-week Watercolor Painting classes beginning the week of November 15th. After a very successful first class, they have expanded their offerings to now include a Watercolor for Kids along with the Watercolor Techniques class, taught by local artist Randy Krause.

Watercolor for Kids for $60 will be offered on Saturdays at 12:30pm.

Watercolor Techniques for $100 will be offered twice, on Saturdays at 2pm or Tuesdays at 6:30pm.

Soo Theatre Project Expands STARS Dance Program

Soo Theatre/STARS is pleased to announce the expansion of its dance program with a new studio across the street from STARS. The north side of Austin’s Oak at 539 Ashmun has been transformed into a large, modern dance space known as STARS studio E. This additional instructional space allows STARS to increase its offerings to 45 dance classes. In addition to a full program of movement, pre-ballet, and ballet classes, STARS will be offering tap, lyrical, jazz, modern, hip hop, acrobatics, ballroom and Scottish Country Dance. Joining Dianna George, Director of dance, will be dance instructors Courtney Bailey, Caroline Behling, Lea Cilluffo, and Martina Vollman.

Fall classes in music include Tunes for Toddlers, Elementary Musical Theater, Voice Performance Class, and Beginning Piano Classes. Private lessons are available in violin, viola, cello, harp, piano, voice, flute, clarinet, and brass instruments. Performing groups set to meet are Youth Chorus for middle and high school students, Intermediate and Senior Youth Orchestras, Flute Choir, “Not Quite Ready for Prime Time” string ensemble, and Recorder Consort.

Acting, Handmade Book Workshops, and Creative Writing offer opportunities for young people to explore their creative side. Yoga classes for teens and adults will meet at morning, lunchtime, and evening times. A new class, Chair Yoga, is designed for seniors and other adults with limited mobility.

Sign Up Now for Stage-Fighting Workshop Starting Jun 30

Orion Couling, Kinross native, is returning back to the area to teach a stage-fighting workshop and performance at Soo Theatre Project. Since Kinross, Orion has graduated with honors from Northern Michigan University, founded EDGE (Esteem Development Through Greater Expectations), is the Artistic Director of Eudaimonia Professional Theatre and Gymkhana Studios, teaches studio classes in Chicago area, fight-directs with independent films, is recognized as an Associate teacher for Dueling Arts, and is an Advanced Actor Combatant for the Society of American Fight Directors (SAFD).

Orion will be joined by his sister, Emily Couling. Emily is attending Northern Michigan University majoring in Theatre and Voice. Emily has been in many productions around this area and with Soo Theatre Project as well. Among the many productions that she was associated with last year, she directed All I Really Needed to Know I Learned in Kindergarten at the Soo Theatre and was the lead in Warrior performed through Northern Michigan University.

The two day stage-fighting workshops are June 30 and July 2 from 6-8 p.m. and will be performed Saturday, July 5, at 7:30 p.m. at Soo Theatre Project in downtown Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. If you enjoy Lord of the Rings and Pirates of the Caribbean, or you have dreamed of knowing the secrets held within being a Jedi or a Kung Fu Master, then this is your stop.

Whether you are a Jedi, Lord of the Rings, Kung Fu Master, or Pirate of the Caribbean, you have one thing in common—you are a stage fighter. Now, you can learn the secrets of fast-paced, adrenaline-pumping action from one of the leading experts in the film and stage industry.

Mr. Orion Couling will be teaching a two-day workshop, June 30 and July 2, at 6-8 p.m. The workshop will culminate in an on-stage production Saturday July 5, at 7:30 p.m. The workshop is limited to 30 middle and high school students. Tuition is $48.

When James P. Penny Packer (a shady accountant) announces that he’ll have to shut down “The Best Little Theater in Town” due to lack of funds, the theater’s owner Mrs. Goodman, popular director Cecille Deville, and the tightly-knit cast go into action! Be a part of this fun-filled “play within a play” as the small town theater company struggles to make ends meet.

This day camp is limited to 30 middle and high school students (grade 6-12). No previous experience is needed. Students will meet Monday through Friday 9 am to 3 pm. Tuition is $150 for the two-week session. The performance of “The Best Little Theater in Town” will be Friday July 18, at 7 p.m. on the Soo Theatre stage. Admission will be $5 per person.

Elementary Arts Exploration Camp July 21-25

Take an adventure around the world through music, dance, storytelling, creative writing and art. Come sing and play music using the piano, recorder, Boomwhackers and other instruments. Write stories, do art work and learn dances inspired by life in countries around the world.

This day camp is limited to 30 children who have completed grades 1-5. No previous experience is needed. Students will meet Monday through Friday 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The camp will conclude with an open house for families Friday July 25, at 2 p.m.

Elementary Musical Theater Camp July 28-August 1

Hansel and Gretel have moved into the Gingerbread House in the forest. But the house is in terrible shape because their neighbors have found the temptation of the tasty house too much to ignore. So they decide to move out. Realizing they have wronged Hansel and Gretel, the neighbors pool their resources and hire the “This Old Home Improvement” team to repair the house.

“This Old Gingerbread House” is a fun musical for children who have completed grades 1-5. No previous experience is needed. Students will meet Monday through Friday 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuition is $75. Enrollment is limited to 30 students. The performance of “This Old Gingerbread House” will be on the Soo Theatre stage on Friday August 1 at 2 pm.

New seven-week classes in dramatic arts and yoga will begin October 29 at Soo Theatre Arts Resource Studios (STARS), 534 Ashmun St., Sault Ste. Marie, MI.

Speech and Dramatic Arts Classes

Speech and Dramatic Arts for children grades 3-6, taught by Dottie Case, will meet Thursdays 4:30-5:30 pm. Tuition is $70. Students will develop stories into reader’s theater.

Yoga Classes

Morning yoga classes will meet Tuesday and/or Thursday 9-10:30 am. Tuition is $77 for one class and $140 for both classes.

Lunch hour yoga will meet Monday and/or Wednesday 12:10-1 pm. Tuition is $63 for one class and $112 for both classes.

An evening yoga class will meet Thursdays 5:30-7:00. Tuition is $77 for this class.

Led by Lee Carlson, all yoga classes are open to beginners as well as those experienced in yoga.
