New at STARS! Junior Choir Starts February 6

Soo Theatre Arts Resource Studios (STARS) is very excited to announce the addition of a Junior Choir to their offerings!

Karley McKee will be directing this group that will be comprised of children ages 7 and above on Monday afternoons from 4:30-5:30. The introductory cost is only $25 and the choir will run February 6th-May 7th. They will also perform in the STARS Mother’s Day concert on May 13th.

STARS Offers Pickford Classes January 30

Soo Theatre Arts Resource Studios (STARS) is very excited to announce that they will be offering select classes in Pickford starting the week of January 30th!

Mary Witucki will be teaching Dance for 5-15y/o, Randy Krause will return to teach Watercolor Painting for Grades K-Adult, and Dave Bigelow will join the group to teach Drawing for Grades 6-Adult. All classes will be held at Pickford Schools in the after school hours.

Soo Theatre Project to host the Annual Christmas Tour of Homes & Tea

The Soo Theatre Project will be hosting this year’s annual Christmas Tour of Homes and Tea on Sunday, December 11th. This year’s tour will feature the four beautiful homes of Mary and Chuck Weber, Julie and David Weir, Allie Brawley, and Tom Sherman.

The Tour will be from 1-4pm and Tea will be from 2-5pm. This year’s Tea will take place at the Soo Theatre’s Studio E located at 539 Ashmun Street. The Tea will be hosted by Dianna George and members of the Footlight Dance Company. There will also be a Christmas program featuring STARS students and faculty to entertain patrons as they enjoy their tea. Door prizes will be awarded as well as a Silent Auction.

Oct 15: Rocky Horror at the Soo Theatre

Just in time to get you into the Halloween spirit, the Soo Theatre Project will be showing the cult classic movie The Rocky Horror Picture Show. (Poster)

This 1975 British musical comedy film parodies science fiction and horror films. Still in limited release nearly 36 years after its premiere, it has the longest-running theatrical release in film history. This movie is about a newly engaged couple who have a flat tire and go to a nearby castle to ask for assistance. Little do they know that they have stumbled upon a crazy household of aliens who are involved in some very odd situations and creations.

The movie will be shown at the Soo Theatre for one night only, Saturday, October 15th at 11pm. The box office will open at 10pm. Audience participation kits will be available for purchase prior to the movie.

4th Annual Show of Shows Sunday Afternoon!

Soo Theatre Project and Rotary Clubs of Sault Ste. Marie are joining together once again to bring you their fourth annual “Show of Shows!”

There will be a cook-out in front of the theatre starting at 12:30pm so you can enjoy lunch and then attend the 2pm show.

This year’s show will feature acts from the Rotary Club of Sault Ste. Marie, the Chippewa Sunrise Rotary, Soo Theatre/STARS faculty and students, Footlights Dance Company, Anishinaabe Toe Tap, LSSU and Sault High Choruses, Foreign Accord Barbershop Quartet, and the debut performance of the Errant Late-Night Gardeners.

There is something for everyone in this show which is sure to please audience members of all ages. One of the Soo Theatre’s most popular events of the year, the “Show of Shows” is a great way to wrap up the summer season and see one last live show before winter sets in.

Sept 1: Mike Dempsey and Friends Return with Music from the Movies

Mike Dempsey returns to the Soo Theatre for
"Mike Dempsey and Friends Go to the Oscars",
on Thur., Sept. 1, at 7:30 p.m.

Mike Dempsey has created yet another musical production for the entertainment of our local communities, this one called "Mike Dempsey and Friends Go to the Oscars." This performance will take place at the Soo Theatre on Thursday, Sept. 1, at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are now available at the Soo Theatre, 534 Ashmun St.

Large audiences enjoyed his last two Soo Theatre productions, one featuring the music of George Gershwin in 2009, and one featuring the music of Rodgers and Hammerstein last year. The singers and instrumentalists and narrator of the last two years will be joined this year by even more talented artists. And as in the last two Dempsey productions, the artists are all giving freely of their time and talents as a fund-raiser for the Soo Theatre Project, for which the local theatre is very grateful.

Dempsey was born and raised in Sault Ste. Marie. He attended St. Mary’s and Sault High Schools. He received both bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Michigan State University, and then served in the U.S. Army. He has been the choral director at Pontiac Central and Pontiac Northern High Schools, and also served as choir director at several Oakland County area churches.

In addition, he has been music director for such large-scale musicals as South Pacific, Oklahoma, Carousel, The King and I, The Music Man, Kiss Me Kate, Superman, You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown, Mame, My Fair Lady, Gypsy, Sweet Charity, Lil’ Abner, and The Sound of Music.

In 1995 he founded his singing group “Mike Dempsey & Friends.” In addition to writing the script and arranging the music, Mike serves as pianist. This small group has performed composer-themed musicals throughout Southeastern Michigan, and the Sept. 1 show is another of these.

Dempsey has been married to Ellen for 54 years, and they have three sons. As a published composer he is a member of ASCAP and was chosen to accompany Tony award-winner Anna Maria Alberghetti in a Detroit area performance. He is delighted to return to his hometown and the Soo Theatre, where he has many happy memories. Dempsey is looking forward to an evening at the movies with his Sault audience. Long-time Sault residents may recall Dempsey’s parents, Athaleen and Tom. Tom's brother Pat will be on stage this time, also, playing the part of Sammy Cahn. Pat was also born and raised in Sault Ste. Marie and is a music professional in Port Huron.

Other artists performing in this musical production are: Karen Hughes Beacom of Pickford, local soprano star of many Soo Theatre productions and both of the other Dempsey shows; Maureen Delaney-Lehman, another fine soprano, who has sung in the other local Dempsey shows; Eric Shaw, professional tenor coming in from Toronto for the third year, who was also born and raised in the two Saults; Linda Freeze, mezzo-soprano, coming from the Detroit area for the first time, who has sung in other Dempsey productions including his one-woman show featuring the music of Judy Garland; and John Young, baritone, coming for the third year from the Detroit area. The narrator is the Sault's own Tom Ewing of Sovereign Communications. Instrumentalists are Gig Stewart, double bassist from Petoskey, and local percussionist Eric Gadzinski.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s famed opera The Marriage of Figaro will bring alive the historic stage of the Soo Theatre Project August 18, 19, and 21st.

Sault Symphony Conductor John Wilkinson and Canadian Director Timothy Murphy have come together to bring you one of the most popular comic operas of all time. This hilarious opera will be presented in English with Resident Soprano Karen Hughes Beacom being joined by visiting professional guest artists John Arnold, Tom Gunther, and Dawn Krogh. The rest of the cast will be comprised of local talent including members of Soo Theatre’s recent hit Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.

On Friday, August 12, one of the world's best guitar players and one of Canada's best singer-songwriters return for one night only to the Soo Theatre.

Joseph at the Soo Theatre!

Community members from the Sault and surrounding areas, including Brimley, Pickford, Hessel and Rudyard have come together to bring you the thrilling biblical story of JOSEPH AND THE AMAZING TECHNICOLOR DREAMCOAT. The cast, crew, and production staff have been hard at work for two months and it shows in their high energy performance. This Andrew Lloyd Webber musical takes you on a tour of different music styles with everything from country western to Elvis and calypso not to mention the large Broadway style group numbers.

Local talent Matt Gilbertson will be leading the cast as Joseph, a role made famous by Donnie Osmond. A cast of 40 will join him, including two local performers and STARS students, Lola Kennedy (Narrator) and Christian Perron (Judah and Butler), who will both be departing for New York in the fall. Lola has been accepted on a scholarship to New York’s American Musical and Dramatic Academy to pursue her vocal career, and Christian will be attending the American Academy of Dramatic Arts on his way to what will surely be a successful acting career.

Their voices are tuned, the costumes are sewn, the lights are bright, and the set pieces are painted. Director Bob Koger says, "I am thoroughly pleased with the work these outstanding performers have devoted to this show. It will be a long time before you will see another live musical that blows you away like this company will!"

Kids' Music Workshop with Switchback July 22

Do you have a child interested in music? The Soo Theatre will have a special “Music is a Family” workshop with singer/songwriters Switchback on July 22nd at 3pm.

This informative presentation is geared towards 11-18 year olds. These two incredibly talented performers will introduce your children to common elements shared between all forms of music. There will be demonstrations of a variety of instruments including the mandolin, bass guitar, and percussion boards. The presentation will be approximately 45 minutes long with a 15 minute question and answer session. Admission is only $5.

STARS Musical Theatre Camp will be presenting the culmination of their hard work in two performances of “The Magical Land of Oz” Thursday June 30th at 7 pm and Friday July 1st at 2 pm.

Over the course of this 3-week camp, children ages 5-14 have mounted a full scale musical production. Campers have learned their lines, put on their dancing shoes, harmonized their voices, and even helped with their own sets, costumes, and props. On Thursday, June 9, 2011 the Soo Locks Boat Tours will once again be sponsoring their famous Pirate Cruise for the third consecutive year as a fundraiser for the Soo Theatre Project. The festivities will begin at 6pm at Soo Locks Boat Tours Dock One.

For the fourth consecutive year audiences can join the local Northland Barbershop Chorus and the Lock Cities Chorus of Sweet Adelines, International for an evening of a cappella music at the historic Soo Theatre. The performance will feature a variety of music including selections from the Beatles, Billy Joel, the Inkspots, the Platters, the Beach Boys, and Elton John songs from “The Lion King” performed by the International choruses comprised of members from both sides of the St. Mary’s River.

The Northland Barbershop Chorus is celebrating 50 years of singing, while the Lock Cities Chorus celebrated their 25th Anniversary last year. These two groups are eager to share their passion for music with you, so don’t miss your chance to see these local talents in what is sure to be an exciting musical event.

Reporting to the Executive Director, the General Manager’s primary responsibilities will be the day-to-day operations of the Soo Theatre’s STARS programs, activities and events. Additional responsibilities will include assisting the Executive Director across all other areas of the Soo Theatre Project.

The successful candidate is highly motivated, thrives in a changing environment, and is prepared to work with an energetic team. The General Manager will enjoy a highly collaborative partnership with the Executive Director and STARS Program Directors. Business Management experience is required, as well as effective organizational skills, excellent customer service skills, personnel supervision experience, and the ability to work unsupervised while maintaining effective team relationships. Sage Peachtree software experience is preferred.

The Human Condition On Stage Friday, May 6

The Sault High Drama Club is proud to present The Human Condition on the historic Soo Theatre stage Friday, May 6, at 7 p.m.

The Human Condition is a series of sketches written by the students of Sault High’s Drama Club about suicide prevention and recognizing the signs of depression in yourself and others. After receiving such a positive response from presenting to their peers, these talented students wanted to share their message with a larger audience and the Soo Theatre Project is happy to be able to give them that opportunity.

Tickets are available at the door. All proceeds will go to benefit local abuse and suicide prevention efforts. Suicide is the third leading cause of death for people ages 18 through 24, so come support our local youth advocating for the increase of knowledge that has the power to save lives.

Summer Musical Auditions May 1, 3, 4, and 5

The Soo Theatre Project is pleased to announce open auditions for this summer's Broadway musical Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor® Dreamcoat. Director Bob Koger and Music/Vocal Director Karen Hughes will be looking for community members to fill roles for 17 men and 12 women, as well as a 20-30 member children’s choir. All auditions will take place at the Soo Theatre, located at 534 Ashmun Street in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan.

Children’s choir auditions will be held on Sunday, May 1st from 2-4pm. **New** We have also added a second day of Children's Choir auditions for Wednesday May 4th 3:30-5:30 pm. Children in grades 3-6 are encouraged to audition for the production. There is nothing for children to prepare in advance of the audition. Auditions for the cast members will be held on Tuesday, May 3rd and Thursday, May 5th from 7:00-9:00pm each night. There is no need to prepare any audition materials, but candidates may bring a prepared song, if they so choose, and are only required to attend one of the audition times in order to be considered.

Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat is the second musical written by the team of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice. It moved on to a Broadway production and was further adapted as a straight-to-video film and traveling Broadway presentation starring Donny Osmond. “Joseph” is a high-energy, fast-paced production with very little spoken dialogue that has a history of exhilarating its audiences since moving to the stage in 1970.

Soo Theatre Project is pleased to announce the schedule for our 2011 summer season (see flyer), opening with a combined STARS/Algoma Youth Orchestra Festival Concert on the 15th of May, followed by the 6th Annual STARS Dance Show May 20th-21st, and ending with the ever popular Rocky Horror Picture Show October 14th-15th.

Throughout the summer and fall there will be a wide variety of live shows and programs for your viewing pleasure, including the musical Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat July 24th – 31st directed by Bob Koger, and Mozart's opera The Marriage of Figaro August 18th-19th & 21st produced by Karen Hughes. Many artists, both local and professional, will grace the Soo Theatre stage, as they offer productions from the STARS Children’s Musical Theatre summer camps, dance camps, talent competitions, and variety shows. National and international music groups will also be performing, including Don Ross & Brooke Miller of Canada, Celtic duo Switchback, and California’s The Kid and Nic Show.

Classes will be offered from 5:00-5:45pm for 8-10-year-olds, 6:00-6:45pm for 11-13-year-olds, and 7:00-7:45pm for 14-18-year-olds.

Soo Theatre Arts Resource Studios is bursting with holiday spirit and will be presenting two programs in December for audiences of all ages to enjoy. The annual Candlelight Christmas concert (see poster) featuring STARS music students and performing groups along with the LSSU Choir will be held on December 11th at 2:00pm. This delightful concert will be held in St. Mary’s Pro-Cathedral located at 320 E. Portage Avenue with admission by donation. Be sure to bring your MESSIAH score to join this talented group while singing the HALLELUJAH CHORUS with the orchestra.

The Second Annual STARS Nutcracker Tea (see poster) will be held on December 18th for children ages 4-10. You will have two chances to be charmed by the talented dance students of STARS with tea parties being held at 1:00pm and 3:00pm. The performances will take place in the Studio E annex located at 539 Ashmun Street, across the street from the STARS office. Tea and cookies will be served and each child under 10 will receive a small gift. Admission for the tea is only $5 and tickets can be purchased in advance at the STARS office. The Soo Theatre Project wraps up its 2010 show season with the third annual benefit variety show presented by the Sault Ste. Marie Rotary Club and the Chippewa Sunrise Rotary Club to be held on Sunday, October 3rd at 2:00 p.m. The Rotary Show of Shows is comprised of highlights from all the productions presented during the Soo Theatre’s recently concluded summer season.

Sault Symphony Orchestra Opens Season at Soo Theatre Sep 25

The Sault Symphony Orchestra presents
an Orchestral Kaleidoscope

The Sault Symphony Orchestra is excited to present an Orchestral Kaleidoscope to kick off their 38th Season. On September 25, the Soo Theatre in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan will be filled with the sights and sounds of this rich and diverse concert event.

Orchestral Kaleidoscope offers a prismatic approach to both the repertoire and the physical movements of the orchestra. Conductor Dr. John Wilkinson leads the orchestra through a variety of classical and pops favorites, while the musicians themselves create a physical movement of sound as they journey through the theatre and the audience.

The diverse program includes such favorite classics as Antonio Vivaldi's “Concerto Grosso in B minor, Opus 3 No. 10” from L'Estro Armonico, Igor Stravinsky's Firebird Suite, W. A. Mozart's “Adagio” from Violin Concerto No. 3 in G major, and Pyotr Illyich Tchaikovsky's “Finale” from Symphony No. 2 in C minor, Op. 17 among many others.

This evening of music and movement also features a special performance of Firewagon Hockey, an original Canadian composition by Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario's own Stephen Mallinger. Audiences will also receive a special solo violin performance by this year's Kiwanis Shield Award winner, Victoria Jones, and they will delight in a variety of pops arrangements including a Star Wars medley and selections from Fiddler on the Roof.

Historic Lake Superior Scenes in 3-D at Soo Theatre Sep 18!

A time machine to visit the shores of Lake Superior in the 1870s? Well, maybe not, but Jack Deo’s 3-D show “Gems of Lake Superior” is the next best thing, and it will be presented at the Soo Theatre in Sault, Michigan, Saturday, September 18, at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.

Mr. Deo, owner of Superior Views in Marquette, Michigan, has assembled a collection of stereoscopic images taken by the photographer B. F. Childs in 1872. Mr. Childs hired a Chippewa guide, and toured the big lake in a Mackinac boat, capturing scenic views along the way with his large and complex camera. These images were sold to the public and were intended for use in a stereo-opticon viewer popular in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Thanks to a digitizing process now available, Deo can project them on a large screen so that spectators wearing 3-D glasses can enjoy them. In fact they may feel that they went along on that trip that took place almost one hundred forty years ago!

The show has been presented this summer to enthusiastic audiences in Marquette, Calumet, Duluth, Ashland, Wisconsin, and Thunder Bay, Ontario. Deo presents about 200 views, along with brief commentary. Scenes likely to be of special interest to Sault residents on both sides of the river include Native American camps at the rapids and Batchewana, the shipping canal (when there was only one lock), Montreal River, Gros Cap, and early Sault street scenes. Although not on Lake Superior, a few views of Mackinac Island will also be given in the Sault show, since the island is part of the neighborhood.

Speaking of the program, Deo said “Wearing 3-D glasses, this show lets you experience the depths of the mines, the heights of Thunder Cape, and a look through the caves of the Pictured Rocks. You will see breathtaking waterfalls and early views of the ships, mining camps, rivers and towns along the shore of Lake Superior. It’s art and history, too. Most early photographers were artists before taking up photography, so you’re going to see some incredible photographs.”

The matinee performance is at 2 p.m., and admission to that show will be free for students 18 years old and younger. (Children twelve and under must be accompanied by an adult.) This special admission is possible thanks to a grant from the Hudson Foundation of Sault, Michigan. The matinee show will include a few views aimed at a younger audience, but otherwise will be much the same as the 7:30 evening performance and thus adults may choose the time that fits their schedules best. Both shows will last about one hour.

Proceeds from the shows will benefit the two sponsoring organizations — the Chippewa County Historical Society, and the Soo Theatre Project. Adult admission is $10.00 for either show. Students 18 and under can get a free ticket for the matinee, or pay $5.00 for the evening show. All tickets will be available at the door. Kid and Nic, from Orange County, California, met in the 90s; Kid was a working saxophonist who played live with The Shirelles, The Ink Spots, Dave Wakeling (The English Beat and General Public) and recorded the Epic Records debut release of the swing/ska group Save Ferris. Nicole was acting in Shakespearean plays, Neil Simon, various musicals, and she played a character on the television series Beverly Hills 90210.

This duo have been together ever since and haven’t looked back! Their interactive performances are high-energy with a blend of swingin' blues and rock and roll. They have been featured on The Discovery Channel and The Food Network's Bobby Flay's Food Nation. The Soo Theatre is proud to announce the return of Mike Dempsey, a highly acclaimed pianist, vocalist and published composer from Southeastern Michigan. Mr. Dempsey thrilled audience members last year with his compilation of “Gershwin”. This year’s production of “Rodgers and Hammerstein” is an evening of music composed by the well-known American songwriting duo of Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II.

Mike was born and raised in Sault Ste. Marie, attending St. Mary’s and Sault High School. He received both bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Michigan State University, and then served in the U.S. Army. He has been choral director at Pontiac Central and Pontiac Northern High Schools, and also served as choir director at several Oakland County area churches.

Additionally, he has been music director for such large-scale musicals as South Pacific, Oklahoma, Carousel, The King and I, Music Man, Kiss Me Kate, Superman, You’re A Good Man Charlie Brown, Mame, My Fair Lady, Gypsy, Sweet Charity, Li’l Abner, and Sound of Music. In 1995 he founded a singing group “Mike Dempsey & Friends”. In addition to writing the script and arranging the music, Mike serves as pianist. This small group has performed composer theme musicals throughout Southeastern Michigan.

Mike's “friends” for the Soo Theatre performance will feature Karen Hughes, resident opera singer, voice teacher and music director at Soo Theatre Project and STARS; Tenor Eric Shaw, who is originally from Sault, Ontario and now sings all over the world and teaches in Toronto; Baritone John Young, who often sings in Mike Dempsey's productions; and singers Maureen Delaney-Lehman and Lola Kennedy, both of whom live in Sault Ste. Marie, MI. All of these performers, except John Young, have been in previous Soo Theatre Broadway and opera productions. Local radio personality Tom Ewing will be the evening’s narrator.

Give My Regards to Broadway Comes to Ashmun Street Aug 21, 22

The Eastern Upper Peninsula Fine Arts Council of DeTour Village, Michigan is bringing their performance of Give My Regards to Broadway to the Soo Theatre stage August 21st at 7:30 pm and August 22nd at 2:00pm. The production is directed by Dave Rhinard and the music is directed by Lyle Juracek. Juracek, from the University of Iowa, was last summer's pianist for Chicago and will also be playing piano for this show.

A dynamic entertainer, playwright, producer, director, George M. Cohan practically invented American musical comedy. The Cohan hits--"Give My Regards to Broadway," "Mary," and "Grand Old Flag"--are timeless bits of Americana. This performance features all of these songs and more, all interwoven into a clever story by Shubert Fendrich about an struggling off-off Broadway theater company's attempts to raise money to put on a Cohan revival. An anonymous "Angel" puts up the money, but it gets complicated when a couple of comic mobsters show up with their hands out. Believe it or not, the show goes on, as evidenced by the final patriotic number of this show within a show.

The EUP Fine Arts Council’s show of this American classic includes James Bailey, Sherry Bailey, Emily Bosley, Paula Bosley, Janelle Dudeck, Kegan Fountain, Lyle Juracek, Lisa MacDonald, Allyson Mrozek, Dave Rhinard, Susie Rhinard, Jody Skinner, Heather Van Daele, and Bob Zahara.

A comedic opera, Gianni Schicchi by Giacomo Puccini, opens Thursday, August 12th at 7:30 p.m. at the Soo Theatre Project. This year the Soo Opera Theatre welcomes guest artists Thomas Gunther from Cincinnati, Ohio and Scott Wichael from Kansas City, Kansas. This is a one-act comedic production, performed in English, starring Thomas Gunther (in rehearsal photo at right) in the title role, Scott Wichael as Rinuccio, and Pickford resident Karen Hughes as Lauretta. Highlighting performers from the Eastern Upper Peninsula and Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, Gianni Schicchi is directed by the talented Timothy Murphy, with Musical Director Karen Hughes, and a live orchestra conducted by Dr. John Wilkinson.

Set in modern day Manhattan, the Donati family is mourning the loss of their dear Buoso Donati, all the while hoping he has willed them his money, real estate, and the finest horse in Jersey. The family becomes outraged when they find out they are not included in Donati’s will. At the same time, Rinuccio is asking to marry Gianni Schicchi’s daughter Lauretta, but no one in the family will allow this since Lauretta does not have a trust fund and Schicchi’s past is not to their standards. Enter Schicchi, whom Rinuccio called, to assess the situation and see if there is a loophole in Donati’s will. Schicchi suggests an outlandish idea of him posing as Donati, alive, and re-writing the will.

Opera Returns Aug 12 to Soo Theatre with Gianni Schicchi

Opera returns to the Soo Theatre for its fifth season with another comedy in English. Professional singers take the stage this August to join the ranks of Soo Opera Theatre’s Artistic Director Karen Hughes and her local cast in this modern satire of a greedy Italian family.

Gianni Schicchi is a one-act comedy by Giacomo Puccini. Director Timothy Murphy of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario returns to the Soo Theatre for a second season, bringing his flair for comedic timing to the production. Baritone Thomas Gunther from Cincinnati, Ohio and tenor Scott Wichael from Kansas City, Missouri will both be making their Soo Theatre debut.

Karen Hughes and Patty Gartshore of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario have been preparing the singers and Dr. John Wilkinson is conducting the orchestra. Local singers (Sam Burdick, Bob Cooper, Maureen Delaney-Lehman, Matt Gilbertson, Michael Irvine, Lola Kennedy, Elizabeth Kinghorn, Meghan Lee, Mik Patton, Tom Peer, Jesse Strieter, Matt Zook) and orchestra members from the Eastern Upper Peninsula and Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario have been busy in rehearsal this month.

Set in present day New York, Buoso Donati has quietly passed away in bed. His relatives are mourning quite dramatically over his death; that is, until they find out they aren’t in the will. All the while Rinuccio (Scott Wichael) is begging his family to let him marry Gianni Schicchi’s (Thomas Gunther) daughter, Lauretta (Karen Hughes). Rinuccio’s family will not allow him to marry Lauretta since she does not have a trust fund. Rinuccio calls Schicchi without the family’s knowledge. Rinuccio explains to them that Schicchi will be able to help them find a way to get themselves included in the will. Zita (Maureen Delaney-Lehman) angrily explains the situation to Schicchi, who is just as angry at the negative reception he and his daughter have received. Lauretta sings “O Mio Babbino Caro,” begging her father to let her marry Rinuccio. Schicchi devises a plan to get the family into the will. As Schicchi assumes the role of the deceased Buoso Donati, so ensues this hilarious one-act comedy.

International Idol Winner Opens for Meat Loaf on July 24 at Kewadin Casinos

Local student and winner of the Soo Theatre International Idol vocal competition will open for Meat Loaf at the Kewadin Casino 25th Anniversary Summer Festival on Saturday, July 24.

Twenty-nine contestants competed for over $2,000 in cash in two different divisions, 13-and-under and 14-and-over. This is the third year for the International Idol competition which, this year, focused on the theme “The Possible Dream.”

Kellan Perron, a Bay Mills resident and the Grand Champion of the 14-and-over division, received the opportunity by Kewadin Casinos to open for American rock icon Meat Loaf, as well as $500 worth of studio time at Lake Street Studio in Brimley, a Music-In-The-Park guest appearance, and an opportunity to perform in a stage production sponsored by the Soo Theatre Project.

“I am thrilled to have this opportunity to not only do something that I really love to do but to do it on such a major stage and with a professional crew of people at Kewadin,” said Perron. “I can’t wait to perform!”

The casino’s three-day summer festival will be held from July 22 to 24.

It will feature four national headlining acts, including 1980s rockers Bret Michaels and Vince Neil, modern rockers 3-Doors Down, and American rock icon Meat Loaf. The festival will also feature celebrity appearances with autograph sessions with Henry “The Fonz” Winkler, former Lion football players Billy Sims and Herman Moore and the famous Playboy Playmates, Shannon James, Brittany B. and Amber Campisi, celebrity chef & spinmaster Marc Weiss “The DJ Chef," and a strolling magician.

The festival will also have food and merchant vendors, a golf simulator, bumper cars, Rock Band Wii, a NASCAR Simulator, electronic bull riding, Baggo tournament, daily food eating contests, and fireworks at the end of each day.

Three-day passes to the festival are available as well as single-day passes. The three-day passes include entry into all concerts and three days of festival activities. A limited number of tickets will be available. Cash sales will be available at the box office during the festival. All festival events will be held at Kewadin Casino Sault Ste. Marie from noon to 10 p.m., rain or shine. Admission to the concerts is general. Gates for the festival open at 11 a.m.

Guys and Dolls Opens Tonight at the Soo Theatre!

Soo Theatre is proud to present Guys and Dolls, opening Thursday, July 15th at 7:30 pm. This Soo Theatre production is directed by Bob Koger, with music directed by Karen Hughes Beacom, choreography by Dianna George, and conducted by Dr. John Wilkinson. Local talent will be gracing the Soo Theatre stage in the Tony Award-winning musical Guys and Dolls July 15-18, 2010. This acclaimed musical is directed by Bob Koger, music directed by Karen Hughes, conducted by John Wilkinson, and choreographed by Dianna George. There are over forty cast members and stage running crew from the Eastern Upper Peninsula involved in this grand production.

Guys and Dolls is a classic American Musical set in the streets and gambling circles of early 1950's New York City. The plot centers around Nathan Detroit (Dr. Richard Morrison) having to come up with funds for the location of an illegal craps game. Gambler Sky Masterson (Christian Perron), who is known for taking crazy bets that he eventually wins, gets maneuvered into a bet by Nathan Detroit that he, Sky, cannot take street missionary Sarah Brown (Shirley Wilkinson) on a dinner date in Cuba. Adding further complication to the plot, Nathan has problems of his own with his nightclub dancing fiancée of fourteen years, Miss Adelaide (Lola Kennedy). Adelaide is applying the pressure for Nathan to marry and start a family. Thus, the hilarious complications begin, resulting in one of America's most beloved musicals. The show brings us such songs as “Bushel and a Peck,” “If I Were a Bell,” “Adelaide’s Lament,” “I've Never Been in Love Before,” “Luck Be a Lady,” and, the title song, “Guys and Dolls.”

The final competition of International Idol was held Sunday, June 27 at the Soo Theatre. The vocal competition started June 6 with 29 competitors in two age group divisions and ended with eight finalists. All of these talented performers are from the Eastern Upper Peninsula and Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario.

The three finalists for the 13-and-younger division were Caitlin LeBlanc, Eva Perron, and Hollyann Beck. The finalists in the 14-and-older division were Morgan Steele, Kierstan Jacobson, and Kellan Perron.

The competition was fierce, but Hollyann Beck and Kellan Perron emerged triumphant in their respective divisions. For more details and links to photos and videos, see the 2010 International Idol Winners Page.

The benefit performance at Soo Theatre will feature students of the Vocal and Opera Workshop, which took place this week. The workshop is being taught by guest instructor Dr. Christopher Hollingsworth and Soo Theatre instructor, Karen Hughes. The vocal program’s focus is to teach the students techniques for performance and preparation in opera and musical theatre.

The competition was close last Sunday, June 20 for the International Idol Vocal Competition held at the Soo Theatre in downtown Sault Ste. Marie. Three contestants in the 13-and-Under Division and five in the 14-and-Older Division qualified for the final round. All remaining contestants are from the Eastern Upper Peninsula and Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario.

Week Three qualifiers in the 13-and-Under Division who will be competing in the finals are Hollyann Beck, Eva Perron, and Caitlin LeBlanc. The 14-and-Older Division final competitors are Morgan Steele, Kellen Perron, Brandon Carr, Kierstan Jacobson, and Caity Carter. Prizes will be awarded to the top three finishers in each division.

The final round of International Idol will be held Sunday, June 27th at 6:00 p.m. This Sunday’s final round guest performer is internationally-known soprano Karen Hughes who will sing "The Impossible Dream" and will speak to the contestants about the many benefits of a music career. Opening the show will be a snippet from the Soo Theatre’s upcoming summer musical, Guys and Dolls.

STARS Presents Alice in Wonderland Jun 25 & 26

The Soo Theatre’s STARS musical theatre summer students, ranging in age from elementary through high school, have been working hard with STARS directors and costumers for the past two weeks in preparation for a wonderful musical adaptation of Alice in Wonderland. Show poster

The show, whose characters are all students of the musical theatre camp, begins with Alice sitting with her sister in the park, when she sees a white rabbit hurry down his hole. She is curious about where the rabbit is going and she follows him into the dark tunnel. Alice, then, finds herself in Wonderland! There, she finds out what it is like to grow and shrink very quickly and along the way she encounters a caucus race, jabbering twins, a rude patch of flowers, a bubble-blowing caterpillar, the Cheshire Cat, the Mad Hatter’s tea party, an angry Queen of Hearts, and a trial in which Alice is afraid she might lose her head!

Performances will be held Friday, June 25th at 7:00 p.m. and Saturday, June 26th at 2:00 p.m. Admission is $5.00 at the door. Don’t miss the chance to watch some very talented musical students and support the efforts of Soo Theatre Project, Inc..

International Idol 2010 Continues June 20: Come See What Happens!

Another spectacular week of competition in the Third Annual Soo Theatre International Idol Vocal Competition was held this past Sunday, June 13th (check out June 13 photos here). International Idol is a vocal competition allowing talented performers from the Eastern Upper Peninsula and Sault, Ontario to compete on the Soo Theatre stage.

The Master of Ceremonies for International Idol is Rock 101 personality, Mark San Angelo. San Angelo was accompanied by judges “Gentleman” George Snider, radio personality Allison Miller, and local singer/actress Amy Preville. Guest artist for Week Two was last year’s International Idol winner, Danielle Petingalo, who spoke about how the dream is constantly on her mind when performing and moving ahead in her career. She is currently working on her first CD with Lake Street Studio.

Week Two resulted in further cuts in the competition. The four contestants in the 13-and-under division moving on to Week Three are Hollyann Beck, Riley Gridzak, Caitlin LeBlanc, and Eva Perron. In the 14-and-older division, only eight contestants will be moving on. They are Brandon Carr, Caity Carter, Tawny Freel, Kierstan Jacobson, Kellan Perron, Larry Peterman, Morgan Steele, and Tiffany Williams. All contestants will be required to perform two songs for Week Three in order for the judges to decide who will participate in the final week of competition to be held June 27th.

The third round of Soo Theatre’s International Idol begins at 6 p.m. this Sunday, June 20th. Special guest performer will be the 2008 Idol competition winner, KT Antler. Admission is $5.00 with all proceeds benefiting the Soo Theatre Project, Inc.

International Idol is Underway; Don't Miss the 2nd Round Sunday, Jun 13!

The third annual Soo Theatre International Idol Vocal Competition is underway, with spectacular performances by all contestants. The vocal competition is modeled after American Idol, but with a twist, as the competitors come from the Eastern Upper Peninsula area, including both Sault, Michigan and Sault, Ontario. Contestants are divided into two age groups, 13 years old and under and 14 years old and above.

Qualifying rounds were held this past Sunday, June 6th, with a total of 29 contestants vying for a spot in next week’s competition. Mark San Angelo did an excellent job as MC, along with the competition's judges George Snider, Allison Miller, and Amy Preville.

Special guest Bill Kritselis performed his song, "Born In Sault Ste. Marie,” for the audience. Mr. Kritselis, in his 80s, who has always hoped to sing on the big stage at the Soo Theater, was able to realize his dream by performing during the first round qualifying.

Seven contestants performed in the 13-and-under age group, all of whom impressed the judges enough to move on to the next round. This group is comprised of Hollyann Beck, Riley Gridzak, Caitlin LeBlanc, Joselynn Payment, Eva Perron, Sam Burton, and Jade Osborn. During the next round this group will perform two songs from two different categories, "Anything Disney" and “Singer’s Choice.”

In the 14-and-older age group there were a total of twenty-two contestants, fifteen of which will be moving on to the next round. Those moving on are Crystal Bialorucki, Hannah Burton, Brandon Carr, Caity Carter, Sarah Donnelly, Zachariah Dose, Tawny Freel, Sheri Hicks, Kierstan Jacobson, Christian Perron, Kellen Perron, Larry Peterman, Morgan Steele, Jesse Trotter, and Tiffany Williams. This group will also perform two songs from two different categories, “Beatles” and “Singer’s Choice.”

The second round of Soo Theatre’s International Idol begins at 6 p.m. this Sunday, June 13th. Special guest performer will be the winner from last year’s competition, Danielle Petingalo. Admission is $5.00 with all proceeds benefiting the Soo Theatre Project, Inc.

The Soo Theatre Project once again presents the much anticipated International Idol competition which focuses this year on the theme "The Possible Dream." For those who have what it takes to challenge themselves and others in determining who is the best at performing vocally on stage, this is for you.

Contestants will vie for over $2,000 in cash and prize money in two different divisions, 13-and-under and 14-and-over. Sponsorship has expanded to include All Good Soundz Music, Lake Street Studio, Old Mission Bank, and Bob Arfstrom. Contestants will be judged every Sunday in June on vocal quality, stage presence and song selection.

This year's competition will start at 4:00pm on June 6th at the Soo Theatre; all who are entering must be at the first performance by 3:30 pm. The top three finalists of each division will be awarded prizes with the Grand Champion prize for the 14 and Over Division paying out $600 for 1st place, $400 for 2nd, and $200 for third. The Grand Champion of the 14 and Over Division will also receive $500 worth of studio time at Lake Street Studio, an opportunity to perform at a Dream Makers Theater presentation, a Music-In-The-Park guest appearance and an opportunity to perform in a stage production sponsored by the Soo Theatre Project.

The Lock Cities Chorus of Sweet Adelines International and Northland Barbershop Chorus of Sault Ste. Marie will be performing the third annual benefit performance for the Soo Theatre Project, Saturday, June 5th at 7:30 p.m. Adult tickets are $15.00 and student tickets are $10.00, available at the Soo Theatre main office and at the door an hour before the performance.

The Lock Cities Chorus of Sweet Adelines are performing a “Let’s Get Away” theme, directed by Judy Hendrickson. The Soo Theatre Project is in need of volunteers to assist with the production crews for the mid-July performances of “Guys & Dolls.” Folks who are willing to help build and paint stage scenery, collect and sew costumes, help with publicity and house management, play in the pit orchestra, serve as scene change crew, gather and organize stage properties, and generally be an integral part of the total production are encouraged to volunteer.

To become involved it is as simple as picking up the phone and calling the Soo Theatre office at 632-1930. Inform the office staff of what crew, or crews, you would like to assist. Be prepared to give your phone and email addresses. Or, you are welcomed to stop by the main office at the downtown Soo Theatre to become a part of this exciting production. You will be contacted by one of the show’s production staff as to planning and work sessions.

Pirate Boat Cruise Jun 9 to Benefit Soo Theatre Project

Last year Soo Locks Boat Tours partnered with Soo Theatre to raise money for the Soo Theatre Project by having a Pirate-themed Boat Tour. It was such a big hit that Soo Locks Boat Tours and Soo Theatre Project are teaming up to do it this year!

The Pirate Boat Cruise will be Wednesday, June 9 at 6:00 p.m. The Pirate Performance on the dock will be followed by a one-hour cruise on the pirate boat. Only 150 pirates are allowed on the boat, so make sure to buy your tickets today. Tickets are $12.00 for adults and $8.00 for children (12 and under). See the poster.

Sault Ste. Marie's Soo Theatre Project has found it necessary to change its choice for its 2010 summer musical. The group had originally planned to present Fiddler on the Roof. However, due to a problem in obtaining the rights to produce the show, it has decided to stage Guys and Dolls. The Soo Theatre has received a license from Music Theater International for the July 15, 16, 17, and 18 production and has begun rehearsals.

Guys and Dolls is a classic American Musical set in the streets and gambling circles of early 1950's New York City. The plot centers around Nathan Detroit, played by local actor Rich Morrison, having to come up with funds for the location of an illegal craps game. Enter gambler Sky Masterson, portrayed by Soo Theatre actor Christian Perron, who is known for taking crazy bets that he eventually wins. Nathan maneuvers Sky into a bet that he, Sky, cannot take street missionary Sarah Brown, portrayed locally by Shirley Wilkinson, on a dinner date in Cuba. Adding further complication to the plot, Nathan has problems of his own with his nightclub-dancing fiancée of fourteen years, Miss Adelaide, acted locally by Melissa Kargiannakis. Adelaide is applying the pressure for Nathan to marry and start a family. Complications ensue, resulting in one of America's most hilarious musicals. The show brings us such songs as “Bushel and a Peck,” “If I Were a Bell,” “I've Never Been in Love Before,” “Luck Be a Lady,” and, the title song, “Guys and Dolls.”

Other assigned roles in the Soo Theatre production are: Matt Gilbertson, Seth Witucki, Jim Schmidt, Wade Leppien, Kaylynn Barber, Becky McCauley, Sam Burdick, Jim Taylor, Lola Kennedy, Twyla Fredrickson, Matt Zook, Andrew Lucas, Ben Deatrick, Nick Cremeans, Mary Witucki, Sharon SanAngelo, Ginger Stratton, and Gabriella Castillo. Also appearing are Melissa Makranyi, Samantha Peck, Jaelinn Soeltner, Haley Weston, Casey Strieter, Hollyann Beck, Melina Talentino, and Christopher Avila.

This will be the first show that director Bob Koger has undertaken with the Soo Theatre Project. However, the show is not unfamiliar to Koger. He has previously directed the show four times. He also performed in the show with a tour of the Orient and South Pacific for the USO and American Educational Theater Association. Regarding the problem of having to change the show following the casting of the original selection, Koger stated, “After finding an outstanding cast, it was disappointing to have to abandon our choice of Fiddler on the Roof. But, in discussions with my fellow directors, we found a show that allows us to actually use the entire cast that we chose for Fiddler. I am convinced that this group of Soo Theatre performers will bring an absolutely stunning production to the folks of the Sault Ste. Marie area.”

Concert May 16: STARS Youth Orchestra and Algoma Conservatory

STARS Youth Orchestra and Algoma Conservatory’s Concert Strings will be teaming up for a combined Festival Concert on Sunday, May 16, at 7:30 p.m. This performance will take place on the historic Soo Theatre stage in downtown Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. For the first time, these two groups will bring together close to 30 highly accomplished young string players from both sides of the river. The program will feature an exciting array of music from the Baroque classics to down home folk music. Conductors of these two groups are Dottie Case from STARS and Rosemary Gosse from the Algoma Conservatory. Admission is by donation.

This will launch the Soo Theatre’s summer season on stage, which will be alive with more than thirty performances from June through October. In their fifth season of major Broadway and opera productions as well as individual concerts from bluegrass to the International Idol Competition, the Soo Theatre strives to offer a little something for everyone. While heavy in production, the project is also continues in the process of renovating the theatre building and complex. The community is encouraged to join the Soo Theatre Project by joining the “Belong to Something Big” campaign, by donating to the Legacy fund for the overall renovation of the theatre, or by getting involved as a volunteer.

STARS Annual Dance Show May 14 & 15

Soo Theatre Project presents its annual dance show, STARS World Dance Tour, Friday, May 14th and Saturday, May 15th 7:00 pm at the LSSU Fine Arts Center. Tickets are $12 for adults, $6 for students and can be purchased at the Soo Theatre office (534 Ashmun Street in Sault Michigan) or at the door.

Over 250 students of ballet, modern, lyrical, jazz, hip-hop, tap and acrobatics will dance to music from all over the world.

Special guest at Friday’s performance will be Miss Michigan 2009, Nicole Blaszczyk. Also featured will be the Footlights Dance Theatre, the advanced dance troupe based at STARS and its four graduating seniors, Karen Donarski, Olivia Francis, Rebecca Neveu and Tenley Roe.

Colorful costuming and the LSSU Arts Center’s state-of-the-art light and sound technology will complement the eclectic mix of world music. Students performing are students of Dianna George, Kaley Darga, Lea Ciffullo and Courtney Bailey. Acrobatic dance by guest choreographer Sarah Eles will also be featured in the show.

A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the United Way of the Eastern Upper Peninsula to boost their support of 18 local agencies working in the three counties.

The Soo Theatre Project once again presents the much anticipated International Idol competition which focuses this year on the theme "The Possible Dream." For those who have what it takes to challenge themselves and others in determining who is the best at performing vocally on stage, this is for you.

Contestants will vie for over $2,000 in cash and prize money in two different divisions, 13-and-under and 14-and-over. Sponsorship has expanded to include All Good Soundz Music, Lake Street Studio, Old Mission Bank, and Bob Arfstrom. Contestants will be judged every Sunday in June on vocal quality, stage presence and song selection.

This year's competition will start at 4:00pm on June 6th at the Soo Theatre. The 13 and Under Division will compete first, followed by the 14 and Over Division at 6:00pm. The top three finalists of each division will be awarded prizes with the Grand Champion prize for the 14 and Over Division paying out $600 for 1st place, $400 for 2nd, and $200 for third. The Grand Champion of the 14 and Over Division will also receive $500 worth of studio time at Lake Street Studio, an opportunity to perform at a Dream Makers Theater presentation, a Music-In-The-Park guest appearance and an opportunity to perform in a stage production sponsored by the Soo Theatre Project.

The successful applicant will take over a growing program teaching Suzuki violin individual and group lessons and reading orchestra. Opportunities also exist to teach viola, cello, preschool music, and elementary summer arts camps. The new violin teacher will join a creative group of artist-teachers at STARS, passionate about their work and open to collaborative projects throughout the eastern Upper Peninsula. Playing opportunities are possible with the Sault Symphony, Marquette Symphony and the Great Lakes Chamber Orchestra.

Qualifications for this position are Suzuki teacher training through Book 2 (minimum) and successful Suzuki teaching experience. A music degree is preferred.

Soo Theatre Project and STARS Win $10,000 National Award

New York, NY – Leveraging Investments in Creativity (LINC) and MetLife Foundation announced the six winners of the nationwide, competitive 2009 MetLife Innovative Space Awards. Soo Theatre Project and Soo Theatre Arts Resource Studios (STARS) in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. received $10,000 in recognition of jump-starting local economic and cultural revitalization by bringing arts education and programming to the region.

When LINC's on-site visitor came to Sault Ste. Marie, he heard from representatives of the hospital, LSSU, Chamber of Commerce, and professionals that this cultural asset is a major recruiting tool to attract and retain new professionals to the community. The awards recognize outstanding efforts in the design and development of affordable space for artists, which is an integral part of LINC’s Space for Change: Building Communities Through Innovative Art Spaces program. These spaces provide a stable foundation from which artists may pursue their works and shape the neighborhoods they inhabit. The winners were selected from more than 90 organizations in 29 states. In 2003 the Soo Theatre Project purchased a historical theatre built in the 1930s and revived the neglected structure to become a cultural destination for its region. Soo Theatre Project’s transformation into an active community arts center and performance venue is the result of a Michigan Cool Cities Grant combined with a no-interest loan from a local bank, along with about 250 individual donations (many of which were in modest amounts, and coming from a community of just 14,500 people) and the sweat equity of countless volunteers. Bringing to its stage the first live performances since 1974, the Soo Theatre now serves its small community with a full roster of classes in dance, music, and theatre, as well as opportunities for students to showcase their work. Re-emerging as a destination point, the Soo Theatre Project and STARS has been a key contributor to bringing residents back into the downtown area.

“We are pleased to recognize the Soo Theatre Project and STARS for their extraordinary work to create innovative, affordable, and sustainable artist space that positively impacts its community,” said Dennis White, president and CEO, MetLife Foundation. “The Soo Theatre Project and STARS and the other winning programs serve as models for communities interested in creating and benefiting from sustainable art spaces.

The Carnegie Center for Literacy and Learning in Lexington, KY was recognized for its robust programming for professional writers and commitment to fostering improved literacy levels in its local community, recognizing the impact that art can have on basic life skills.

The City of Asylum/Pittsburgh, Pa. provides outstanding levels of service to artists in exile through a residency program with a full range of support services for the personal and professional recovery of artists and their families.

Open Book 2.0 in Minneapolis, Minn. exemplifies collaboration among local non-profits. Three independent organizations, The Loft Literary Center, Milkweed Editions, and Minnesota Center for Book Arts pooled resources to form a vibrant literary arts center.

Watts House Project in Los Angeles, Calif. meshes artists’ skills with local needs to improve households, creating a bond between artist and neighbor by integrating sustainable building and landscaping into everyday life.

The grand prize winning organization, The International Sonoran Desert Alliance (ISDA), received $50,000 in recognition of its development of the Curley School, an exceptional, community-engaged artist space anchoring an arts-based revitalization movement in the border town of Ajo, Arizona and neighboring Tohono O’odham Nation and Sonora, Mexico.

“Artist spaces should be fundamental to well-planned communities. We hope a broader set of stakeholders, including policymakers, planners and other civic leaders, will embrace arts and culture as significant components of effective development strategies,” said Susan Silberberg-Robinson, associate project director, MetLife Innovative Space Awards and lecturer in Urban Design and Planning, MIT.

Ice Age: The Story Behind the Story (from the Writer Michael J. Wilson)

Editor’s Note: When we found out that Michael J. Wilson, the writer of the Ice Age story, is the son-in-law of Soo Theatre Board members Mary and Al McKay, we asked him for a little background on his experience. Here’s what he sent us.

Ice Age began as a two-word idea that 20th Century Fox wanted to develop. Many writers went in and pitched on these two words. Pitched characters. Pitched story. Pitched anything and everything to get the job. This is what you call a "bake-off" in Hollywood. The good news is, you are "approved" to come in and pitch. Not just anybody can enter the bake-off. The bad news is, they don’t pay you for the work you bring in for the pitch. So, for all the time you spend preparing the pitch -- it’s a risk. You could end up with nothing! I spent two weeks researching the Ice Age. I discovered that for a brief period of time Neanderthal man and mammoths co-existed. The Neanderthals used the mammoth skin and bones and fur for everything. Shelter. Soup. Jewelry. Blankets. Weapons. You name it! Nothing was wasted. I came up with a central conflict. What if a mammoth saved a Neanderthal baby's life? What if this is the one mammoth a Neanderthal can't kill -- because he owes the mammoth big-time?

My three-year-old daughter helped me with the pitch. She came up with a character in Ice Age that is a combination of a squirrel and a rat. She called him Scrat. "What does Scrat want?" I asked Flora. "Dad. Hello? Scrat wants the acorn." Wow! So simple. I have been forever in Flora's debt and creative shadow ever since.

Speaking of my daughter Flora, at this period in time I was telling stories in her class every week. So, as I was writing the Ice Age script, I would pitch out ideas and characters and her class would help me write it. One day I was stumped. "What does Diego want?" I asked the class. (Diego is the saber-tooth tiger). One kid named Willie raised his hand. "Diego wants to EAT the baby!" he proclaimed loudly. Thus began the thread behind the story of Diego, and how he had a secret agenda, and was leading Manfred (the mammoth) and Sid (the sloth) and Roshan (the baby) into a TRAP! Thank you, Willie.

I used to follow Willie to his mom's car and ask him question after question about my script. I thought he was a genius. He eventually moved away. I was very sad. (I was also asking him questions about my life. He was three. He was very wise.)

The studio did not want Roshan's mother to die in Act 1. This was a big fight. They were afraid it was too scary and downbeat for little children. I pointed out many characters in many classic fairy tales and movies die. They insisted I let her live. But it did not work dramatically. I wanted Manfred to see her die so we would buy that he would take on little baby Roshan's plight. I won that fight -- but it took three months. Finally we compromised. I got to kill the mom. But it was a cutaway. One moment she was in the water pleading for Manfred to take care of her baby. When we cut back to her moments later -- she was gone. Drowned. It was very effective. I am so glad I won this fight! Studios are so afraid of scaring little kids. When I was four, I saw The Wizard of Oz. It was terrifying! I loved it! Can you imagine The Wizard of Oz without those flying monkeys? Or without the Wicked Witch trying to kill Dorothy?

The best thing about creating the story for Ice Age and writing the script was that it took three years. It was so much fun! But eventually I got very burned out. Animation takes a long time. The rewriting is insane. They wanted me to move to New York where the animation was being done and keep working on it. But I had family obligations in California and couldn't go. Other writers were brought in. They created the dodo birds sequence which I love. They also added some other characters—some of which ultimately were cut from the finished film—and they did a lot of work and had a lot of fun with Scrat. They all did a great job.

The theme for Ice Age is simple. Stick with the herd. At the beginning Manfred is a broken lost soul with no family. By the end he has integrated lovingly and successfully with Roshan and Diego and Sid. They are his "herd". I was very proud of Manfred's character. Especially the scene where he looks at drawings on the wall and remembers what happened to his family. The animation work on this scene is amazing. His face. His eyes. This is some of the best animation I have ever seen. Not a lot of noisy crazy graphics. Just pure simple emotion.

I was asked to work on the other Ice Age movies but declined. You can't top that first one! I didn't want to try. The other movies are wonderful and very funny. But I love the emotion and the creation of the characters in the first one.

Movies Return to the Soo Theatre Saturday, October 17!

The Soo Theatre Project is pleased to announce the return of the genre you've all been waiting for: Movies!

Just in time for the Halloween season, we will show the cult classic, The Rocky Horror Picture Show, on Saturday, October 17. A landmark event, this will be the first movie shown at the Soo Theatre in ten years.

This 1975 British musical comedy film parodies science fiction and horror films. Still in limited release nearly 34 years after its premiere, it has the longest-running theatrical release in film history. The movie is about a newly engaged couple who have a flat tire and go to a nearby castle to ask for assistance. Little do they know that they have stumbled upon a crazy household of aliens who are involved in some very odd situations and creations.

The movie will be shown at the Soo Theatre for one night only, Saturday, October 17th. There will be two movie showings, one at 7:30 p.m. and one at midnight. The 7:30 p.m. showing will just be the movie and the midnight showing will feature an interactive performance by members of the LSSU Dance Company. Kits will be available for the midnight showing.

The Soo Theatre Project is proud to present Don Ross and Brooke Miller, the legendary solo guitarist and one of Canada’s finest new songwriters together in concert, as they return to the Soo Theatre stage Friday, October 16 at 7:30 p.m.

One of today's true innovators of guitar composition and technique, Don Ross has emerged as one of the most respected musicians in Canada and one of the top guitarists in the world. Noted for the emotion and intensity of his playing as well as his technique, his music borrows from blues, jazz, folk, and classical music, creating a style that he describes as "heavy wood".

Brooke Miller hails from Prince Edward Island on Canada's Atlantic coast. Once a punk band singer that had opened for such bands as Modest Mouse and Sloan, she soon outgrew the three-chord confines of punk and began exploring more sophisticated and challenging techniques and genres--from the intricacies of finger-picking to the more colorful palette of jazz. Today her music reflects the more refined simmering that only a few years and intense devotion to both perfecting serious craft and living meaningful life can bring.

Auditions for Amahl and the Night Visitors Oct 4 and 5

The Soo Opera Theatre announces auditions for Amahl and the Night Visitors by Gian Carlo Menotti.

This one act vocal work tells a heartwarming story of a crippled boy named Amahl (Boy Soprano) and his mother who are visited by three kings (Tenor, Baritone & Bass) on their way to Bethlehem. They are also visited by the shepherds (SATB chorus) and a lovely dance piece is included in this work. The production will be directed by Dave Rhinard of DeTour and Karen Hughes of Pickford. Amahl and the Night Visitors will be performed in Cedarville Dec. 3rd, 4th, and Dec. 6th in Sault Ste. Marie.

The casting for Amahl and the Night Visitors are: One boy soprano in the role of Amahl (Age 10-12); Kaspar, a king – Tenor; Melchior, a king – Baritone; Balthazar, a king – Bass baritone; A Page – Bass; SATB Chorus of all ages, and 10-12 Dancers.

Auditions are Sunday, October 4th 2:00-4:00 at Cedarville High School and Monday, October 5th 7:00-9:00 at Soo Theatre Project in Studio D.

Soo Theatre Project presents the second annual Rotary Show of Shows Sunday, September 27 at 2:00 pm. For the second time the Sault Ste. Marie Rotary Club and the Chippewa Sunrise Rotary club’s team up to present this amazing variety show. Favorite local performers, singers, dancers, and players from STARS join Rotary members onstage for the performance. The stars include Dennis Brooks, Bill and Brian Stanaway performing as Second Wind; and Footlights and friends and Dianna George. Tricia and Kurt Huebschman, Jim Schmidt with Mark and Sharon San Angelo will recreate scenes from the summer smash hit Oliver! Open House For New STARS Annex Sep 9

STARS is expanding!

STARS (Soo Theatre Arts Resource Studios) and Soo Theatre have expanded across the street, now sharing space with Austin’s Oak. About three weeks ago the dividing wall went up and the work commenced. Dianna George, Soo Theatre founder and STARS Dance Director, and many dedicated volunteers have been putting in the hours and hours of work to make this new space a beautiful addition to the STARS studios. STARS has been expanding in student enrollment since its inception four years ago.

An Open House for the STARS annex Studio E will be on Wednesday, September 9th at 4:00 p.m. in the newly renovated studio space across the street from STARS and Soo Theatre Project.

More classes, more teachers, more fun! Joining STARS teaching staff are:

Martina Vollman, Ballroom;
Caroline Behling, Scottish Country Dance;
Kaley Darga, Modern, African Dance, Senior Adult Dance, and Tap;
Courtney Bailey, Tap, Lyrical/Jazz, Ballet, and Acrobatics; and
Lea Cilluffo, Hip Hop and Jazz.

Darga, Bailey, and Cilluffo are members of the LSSU Dance Company directed by Deb Choszczyk. Martina Vollman has been teaching ballroom for the past three years and Kaley Darga has been teaching at STARS for the past two years.

Not only are there more dance classes and teachers, other STARS classes have been added:

Lee Carlson has added chair yoga for adults to her yoga class list this fall;
Dianna George will be teaching Acting and Stagecraft;
Jillena Rose will be teaching Show and Tell: experiment with mixed visual media and writing.

Other classes that have been added are Daytime Dancing for Adults, Beginning Tap for Adults, Modern, Lyrical/Jazz, Scottish Country Dance, and Acrobatics.

Eric Shaw Returns to the Soo Theatre for An Evening of Gershwin Sept 3

Once again, international tenor Eric Shaw, native of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, returns home for a benefit for the Soo Theatre Project in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. Now based in Toronto, Mr. Shaw will appear Thursday night, September 3, in a production that features the music of George and Ira Gershwin.

Shaw said of the show in a recent interview with the Sault (Ontario) Star:

"I enjoy this music for the cleverness of the lyrics and unfailingly tuneful music. Both the accompaniment and music are quite sophisticated, but come across as fun and breezy. These are real entertainment pieces that have staying power due to their timeless themes and hummable melodies."

Soo Theatre 2009 Season Update

The Soo Theatre Project's Great 2009 Summer Season continues through October 17. Here are the upcoming season events. Stay tuned to our newsblog for more information on these events.

CHICAGO
Friday, August 28 and Saturday, August 29 at 8:00 pm, and Sunday, August 30 at 2:30 pm.
Admission is $16.00 for adults, $15.00 for seniors (62 and up), $8.00 for students (High School & College undergrads ID). Group rates available.

The EUP Arts Council production of the Broadway Musical Chicago will be performed at the Soo Theatre August 28, 29, and 30. This production of Chicago is performed by all local EUP talent. Retired Rev. Dave Henderson of the Presbyterian Church in Sault Ste. Marie will be performing on stage in this Broadway classic along with Karen Hughes, Trisha Wells, Dave Rhinard, and many more locally talented performers.

Mike Dempsey, originally from Sault Ste. Marie, arranged the music and will be playing piano and singing in the production. Mike's friends for the Soo Theatre performance will feature Karen Hughes, resident opera singer, voice teacher and music director at Soo Theatre Project and STARS; Tenor Eric Shaw who is originally from Sault, Ontario and now sings all over the world and teaches in Toronto; Baritone John Young who sings often in Mike Dempsey's productions; and the talented singers Maureen Delaney-Lehman and Trisha Wells, both whom have music backgrounds and live in Sault Ste. Marie, MI. All of these performers, except John Young have been in previous Soo Theatre Broadway and opera productions. Two local personalities, Tom Ewing and Tom Lehman will be narrating.

This two-act show presents the Beatles in all of their glory through all of their memorable songs and how they got there.

Gershwin Extravaganza To Benefit Soo Theatre Sept 3

"Native son" Mike Dempsey is coming home to Sault Ste. Marie to present a musical program at the Soo Theatre, An Evening of Gershwin, on Thursday, Sept. 3, at 7:30 p.m. Event poster

An accomplished pianist, arranger, composer, and director, Mike is using both local and imported talent in his Gershwin show. There will be two narrators, Tom Ewing of WSOO and Tom Lehman, Kinross dentist, who was Emile in South Pacific on the Soo Theatre stage last summer. Dr. Lehman will be playing the part of Ira Gershwin.

Singers taking part in the evening's musical extravaganza are: Karen Hughes Beacom, soprano; Trisha Wells, mezzo-soprano; Maureen Delaney-Lehman, soprano; Eric Shaw, tenor; and John Young, baritone. The women all live in this area; Shaw was born and raised here, but lives now in Toronto; and Young is from Toronto and now lives in the Detroit area. Mike Dempsey, who wrote the script and put together an evening of song, will be accompanying everyone on piano and doing some narration of his own.

Michael Dempsey, pianist, arranger, composer, and director

Mike was born and raised in Sault Ste. Marie. He attended St. Mary’s and Sault High Schools, received both bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Michigan State University, and then served in the U.S. Army. He has been the choral director at both Pontiac Central and Pontiac Northern High Schools, and also served as choir director at several Oakland County area churches.

In addition, he has been music director for such large-scale musicals as South Pacific, Oklahoma, Carousel, The King and I, The Music Man, Kiss Me Kate, Superman, Charley Brown, Mame, My Fair Lady, Gypsy, Sweet Charity, Lil’ Abner, and The Sound of Music. In 1995 he founded a singing group, “Mike Dempsey & Friends.” In addition to writing the script and arranging the music, Mike serves as pianist. This small group has performed composer-theme musicals throughout Southeastern Michigan. Later in September Mike and one of his singers will be paying tribute to Judy Garland with an evening of her songs at Oakland University. He would like to bring his Garland show to the Soo Theatre in 2010.

As a published composer he is a member of ASCAP. Recently, he was chosen to accompany Tony award-winner Anna Maria Alberghetti in a Detroit area performance. He is delighted to return to his hometown and the Soo Theatre, where he has many happy memories.

Anyone who has lived in Sault Ste. Marie for a few decades may recall Mike’s parents, Athaleen & Tom, and brother Patrick (Sault High 1959).

All of this fine talent is being donated as a generous fund-raiser for the Soo Theatre Project, Inc. STP's Board of Directors and staff invite the community, its residents, and its visitors to come and enjoy the beautiful Gershwin songs.

Chicago at the Soo Theatre Aug 28-30

Soo Theatre Project is pleased to welcome the EUP Fine Arts Council production of the Tony-Award-winning Broadway musical Chicago August 28, 29, and 30 following its successful run at their home theatre in DeTour. This is the fourth time EUP Fine Arts Council has brought their productions to the Soo Theatre stage. Chicago is directed by David Rhinard, produced by Cindy Verruso and Susie Rhinard, music director Karen Hughes, and choreographed by Sherry Bailey.

There are many familiar faces filling this performance of Chicago from all over the EUP and Ontario.

Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario resident Rachelle Deresti will be playing the piano for the Soo Theatre presentation of Chicago. Deresti is the music director at the Little Stone Church on Mackinac Island and teaches at the Algoma Conservatory in the winter months. Deresti was the pianist for Soo Theatre’s 2007 summer production of Annie. Rachelle earned her performance degree in piano from the University of Toronto.

Karen Hughes is Little Mary Sunshine who plays her role primarily from the bandstand where she does her news reporting as well as keyboard playing. Hughes originally prepared the singers in musical rehearsals and is excited to see the progress of so many of the performers in the cast.

Jesse Strieter, the amazing and talented 16-year old from Pickford leads the rhythm section of the band. Jesse is no stranger to the Soo Theatre having been in It's a Grand Night for Singing, Die Fledermaus, and Oliver.

Trisha Wells plays Mona, one of the murderesses on the cell block. Casey Strieter, the beloved Bet in Oliver, takes on her first stage managing role and keeps things organized backstage and onstage. Director Dave Rhinard appears as the debonair lawyer, Billy Flynn. He will 'razzle dazzle' you as he aids the girls in the pursuit of their innocence. Nick and Julia Meier, seen on the Soo Theatre stage in South Pacific, add strong performances to the cast with their portrayals of Amos Hart - "Cellophane" and Mama Morton - "When you're good to Mama".

Chicago at the Soo Theatre is Friday, August 28th and Saturday, August 29th at 8:00 pm and Sunday, August 30th at 2:30 pm. Soo Theatre Project Expands STARS Dance Program

Soo Theatre/STARS is pleased to announce the expansion of its dance program with a new studio across the street from STARS. The north side of Austin’s Oak at 539 Ashmun has been transformed into a large, modern dance space known as STARS studio E. This additional instructional space allows STARS to increase its offerings to 45 dance classes. In addition to a full program of movement, pre-ballet, and ballet classes, STARS will be offering tap, lyrical, jazz, modern, hip hop, acrobatics, ballroom and Scottish Country Dance. Joining Dianna George, Director of dance, will be dance instructors Courtney Bailey, Caroline Behling, Lea Cilluffo, and Martina Vollman.

Fall classes in music include Tunes for Toddlers, Elementary Musical Theater, Voice Performance Class, and Beginning Piano Classes. Private lessons are available in violin, viola, cello, harp, piano, voice, flute, clarinet, and brass instruments. Performing groups set to meet are Youth Chorus for middle and high school students, Intermediate and Senior Youth Orchestras, Flute Choir, “Not Quite Ready for Prime Time” string ensemble, and Recorder Consort.

Acting, Handmade Book Workshops, and Creative Writing offer opportunities for young people to explore their creative side. Yoga classes for teens and adults will meet at morning, lunchtime, and evening times. A new class, Chair Yoga, is designed for seniors and other adults with limited mobility.

Registration is open now for the 14-week fall term which begins Sept. 14. GUITAR STUDIO ROCK CAMP

Soo Theatre Project presents Guitar Studio Rock Camp, Tuesday, August 18, 2009 at 7:00 pm. This all student show is presented by Rock Camp Director, guitar, and bass instructor Joey Beairl. Beairl was assisted by drum instructor, Mike Vollman. Joey’s wife, Amy helped with vocals and other band advice. This is a performance of the students involved with Guitar Studio Rock Camp. Performing on Soo Theatre’s stage is a wonderful experience for these up and coming performers.

The students work together to pick their band name and their song list. They learn their parts in lessons and attend weekly rehearsals starting in June. The first two summers of Rock Camp led to one performance for each of the bands. Because these were successful, and the students were ready to handle more, additional venues were sought, resulting eventually in five performances each summer. Summer 2009 provided 4 brand new venues including the Chippewa County Relay for Life, Mackinaw City Crossings, Soo Theatre Project, Family Day at the Satisfied Frog, and a Rock Camp road trip to Foggy’s in Christmas.

Three bands will be performing on Tuesday, August 18, Unleashed, 747, and Intrepid. Soo Theatre Project presents Così fan tutte also known as Women Are Like That. This comic opera performed in English is by W.A. Mozart. Così fan tutte is directed and produced by Karen Hughes and Soo, Ontario’s Timothy Murphy. Cedarville’s music man Alan Jacobus will be conducting an array of local talent in the 22-person orchestra. The six principal characters are Karen Hughes Beacom as Fiordiligi, Trisha Wells as Dorabella, John Arnold as Guglielmo, Christopher Hollingsworth as Ferrando, Rosemary Hollingsworth as Despina, and Bradley Williard as Don Alfonso. For more information about the principals, see our previous post. Also on stage will be an all-local chorus. Two weeks ago you may have seen most of the chorus members performing at Soo Theatre’s Vocal Gala.

Così fan tutte is set in present day Sault Ste. Marie, where two Coast Guard men, Guglielmo and Ferrando, are tricked into a bet by the crafty Don Alfonso. He bets them that their faithful fiancées, Fiordiligi and Dorabella, are fickle, like all women are. The bet is set for the men to be called off to duty and return disguised as Canadian hockey players. The sisters Fiordiligi and Dorabella are given the bad news about their men; the four have a heartfelt farewell and are left without their men. Don Alfonso is afraid that Despina, the sisters’ chambermaid, will see past Guglielmo and Fernando’s disguise so he bribes her into helping him win the bet. The sisters meet the two Canadian hockey players who instantly begin courting them, but resist because they are faithful to their fiancées. The Canadian hockey players do not give up and think of many crafty ways to win Fiordiligi and Dorabella’s affection with the help of Don Alfonso and Despina. All the while the sisters are struggling not to fall for these new men. The hockey players end up winning the affection of the sisters, but what happens when Guglielmo and Ferrando come back from war and notice their women have fallen for two other men? The cast of Così fan tutte has arrived at the Soo Theatre and rehearsals are in full swing! No less than six professional opera singers will grace the Soo Theatre stage in Mozart’s comic opera, which will be performed in English on August 6, 7, and 9. This two-act comedy will have you rolling with laughter while being blown away by the astounding vocal abilities of these six professional performers.

This year’s featured performers come from around the United States and right here in Sault Ste. Marie.

New York Bass Baritone Bradley Williard (Don Alfonso) joins the Soo Theatre Project for the first time with his comic rendition of the master of ceremonies.

Soprano Rosemary Hollingsworth makes her third appearance at Soo Theatre this season as Despina, the charming and somewhat devious chambermaid to the sisters Fiordiligi and Dorabella. Hollingsworth appeared as the lovable chambermaid Adele in last season’s Soo Theatre production of Die Fledermaus.

Baritone John Arnold, as Guglielmo, comes to us from Atlanta, Georgia. Arnold was Count Almaviva in Italy last summer singing opposite soprano Karen Hughes Beacom as Countess Almaviva in The Marriage of Figaro.

Illinois State University Department Chair and tenor Chris Hollingsworth (Ferrando) made his debut with the Theatre last season as the featured tenor in A Grand Night for Singing.

Resident artists Karen Hughes Beacom and Trisha Wells will be playing the roles of Fiordiligi and Dorabella, the two sisters who are put to the test by the cynic, Don Alfonso. Wells recently “wowed” audiences as the fiery Nancy in Soo Theatre’s production of Oliver!

Così fan tutte is being directed and produced by Soo Theatre’s own Karen Hughes Beacom and Canadian resident Timothy Murphy. Alan Jacobus of Cedarville is the conductor of the Così fan tutte orchestra. The members of this 22-person orchestra all reside locally, hailing from the Eastern Upper Peninsula and Canada. This performance also includes a chorus of EUP and Canadian residents.

The Soo Theatre's First Live Webcast

History was made once again at the historic Soo Theatre on the night of Thursday, July 16 at the Switchback Concert: our venue went global with our first live internet broadcast.

Here's what Brian FitzGerald and Marty McCormack, who make up the musical partnership known as Switchback, said about the event on their website:

"A milestone was accomplished on July 16, when we had our first live web concert and chat room on the WayGood website. For those of you who missed it, it was an exciting evening at the Soo Theatre for not only Brian and Marty, but the people in the audience. They were told that they were part of a bigger event with people watching and commenting from Germany to Florida.

"Technical difficulties prevented [opening act] the Syzygy boys from being broadcast, but it was a "go" just as Switchback walked onstage. When Marty stopped the concert to announce that we were being broadcast live online all over the world, you could feel the excitement in the theater ratchet up a notch. ...It was a really great night, lots of energy transferred back and forth between the stage, the live audience and the online fans!"

In 1999 Keith moved to Las Vegas to pursue his career in entertainment and enroll at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Throughout college, Keith gained valuable experience performing at local casinos and corporate events. It is during this time Keith started receiving offers to perform overseas. He was soon found in airports around the world on his time off from school bringing his blend of comedy and magic to international audiences!

Still in his mid-20’s, Keith has become one of the busiest comedy magicians in the country, performing more than 100 shows per year at some of the largest casino, resort, and outdoor entertainment venues in the country. Influenced heavily by the comedians and magicians of yesteryear, Keith has blended classic effects of magic that haven’t been seen in decades with cutting-edge comedy to create a unique show while making his audience crack up the entire way!

Keith’s credits include three tours in Hong Kong, five years as an official magician representing ConAgra (over 200 performances), and many years of experience in outdoor fair/festival entertainment.

Keith’s Las Vegas credits include a run at Fitzgerald’s Casino, featured in the revue show Two Girls and a Guy, followed by five months of performances at the Flamingo, Las Vegas. His tours take him to over 50 cities throughout the U.S. annually. Other appearances include concerts featuring the Neville Brothers and The Charlie Daniels Band as well as appearing on TV for the Children’s Miracle Network Telethon.

The scores are in! The International Idol 09’ Vocal Competition Series is completed! Danielle Petingalo of Kincheloe is this year's International Idol!

Week Five went through with three contestants: Corrine Koenemann of Sault Ste. Marie, Payton Mastaw of Sault Ste. Marie, and Danielle Petingalo of Kincheloe. Corrine, Payton, and Danielle were all in close competition with each other. Each managed to have a unique edge to their performance that showed off their personalities well. Their challenge for the fifth week was to perform a song by someone they looked up to that portrayed their best singing and performing skills.

This year Lake Street Studio, owned and operated by Soo Theatre’s own Technical Director, Taylor Brugman, donated three studio time prizes. This year the prizes were: third place $100, second place $200, and first place $500 of studio time at Brugman’s Lake Street Studio in Brimley.

Judges Dennis Brooks and Gentleman George Snider and MC Mark SanAngelo were ecstatic to announce the three winners. Danielle Petingalo took first place, Corrine Koenemann took second place, and Payton Mastaw took third place. The competition was close for the three contestants but, at the end of the night, Danielle Petingalo came through with the highest scores in pitch, timing, presence, interpretation, originality, and quality.

Switchback Performs at the Soo Theatre July 16

The Chicago band Switchback will be performing a benefit concert for the Soo Theatre Project at the Soo Theatre on Thursday, July 16th at 7:30pm. Opening for Switchback will be Syzygy, a young energetic acoustic folk/rock band from Northern Michigan that has been playing shows and festivals in Michigan and Canada for the last 5 years. This benefit performance for the Soo Theatre Project is part of the 2009 Soo International Arts Festival.

Comprised of Marty McCormack on bass and vocals and Brian Fitzgerald on guitar and vocals, Switchback plays a blend of their own original Americana and Celtic songs, plus a variety of cover tunes from the Beatles, Willie Nelson, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Johnny Cash and more. Switchback has toured the world over the last 12 months, including performances at the Stan Rogers Folk Festival in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Matt Molloy's pub in Westport, County Mayo, Ireland, concerts and wedding in the Netherlands, several shows in Ontario and a Celtic festival in Hawaii. The duo also performed some of their heart stomping original Irish tunes backed by the Northwest Indiana Symphony Orchestra at the Star Plaza Theater in Indiana last year. "No matter what the venue or where the location, we just love sharing our music with folks," said McCormack.

One of the high points for the band last year was the award they received from the Irish Music Association. Switchback was named the 2008 Top Duo for festivals, concerts and pubs in the US, Ireland, the EU and the United Kingdom. This was in addition to the many awards they have received over the years for their songwriting, including being selected as one of "Performing Songwriter Magazine’s" top 10 Independent albums of the year for "The Fire That Burns", produced by Grammy-winning producer Lloyd Maines. Switchback has produced ten albums over the last 15 years and they are currently putting in studio time for the next two, due out in the fall of 2009.

Oliver! The Musical On Stage July 9-12

July 9 brings the Soo Theatre’s production of Oliver! The Musical to the stage. Running Thursday through Sunday, this award-winning musical, adapted from the novel Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens, is directed by David Rhinard, with music direction by Karen Hughes and choreography by Dianna George. The cast features over fifty performers of all ages, all from the Eastern Upper Peninsula.

An orphan in the harsh world of Victorian England, Oliver dreams of a better life. He meets a variety of thieves and vagabonds who want to bring Oliver into their world. Oliver is befriended by one of them, a boy known as the Artful Dodger, who teaches Oliver how to be a pickpocket and offers him friendship with the song “Consider Yourself.” Dodger gives him a place to sleep in Fagin’s lair. Deep down, Oliver knows what is moral and immoral but he desperately wants a family to call his own. He finds a mother figure in Nancy, the girlfriend of the terrifying Bill Sykes. Nancy and her sister Bet sing about how much fun it is to have a little danger in one’s life in “It’s a Fine Life.” A shift happens on a muggy morning. Oliver steals from the wrong man, Mr. Brownlow, who ends up wanting to adopt the boy. He has a strange kinship with Oliver but, with the new thieving friends in his life, Oliver finds it hard to stay with Mr. Brownlow.

To provide the experience of acting in a major role to several young actors, the roles of Oliver and the Artful Dodger are double cast. On their alternate nights, the boys play roles in the chorus.

Oliver! is a musical for the whole family. Show dates and times are Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights July 9, 10, and 11 at 7:30 pm, along with a Sunday matinee at 2:00 p.m. on July 12. June 27: Book Signing: An American Café: Reflections from the Grill

The Gianakura brothers, Chris and Samuel, having arrived in Sault Ste. Marie in the late 1890s, established the American Café in the newly built Soo Theatre complex in 1930. Peter, Chris's son, has written an account of the history of the two men, the businesses they owned, and memoirs of his own life, continuing their legacy.

Peter Gianakura will be signing his newly released book about the American Café at the same site that housed the restaurant that he and his family owned. There will be an open house from 2 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, June 27 at what is now the office for the Soo Theatre Project and STARS.

An American Café: Reflections from the Grill is the title of Peter Gianakura’s new book. It is a collection of delightful tales about the small restaurant that he ran, first with his father and then on his own. The American Café, fondly remembered by folks all over the Eastern Upper Peninsula, evolved from two candy stores owned by Peter’s dad and uncle. The American Confectionery Store was located closer to Spruce Street and was forced to move when Kresge's came to town. Peter’s dad was able to move to the storefront next to the Soo Theatre where his uncle had a miniature candy factory in the basement. As the big candy companies came on the market, the Gianakuras couldn’t compete and the shop evolved into a sandwich and luncheon gathering spot.

Peter had no inclination to be in the restaurant business, he recalled in a recent interview with Meta Geyer. When he finished his stint in the Army as a medic, however, he couldn’t say no to his dad. He learned the business and worked beside his dad until he retired. Peter was behind the counter 43 years, and when he and Georgia were married, she became the restaurant's famous pie maker. They sold the café in 1989 and still run into former customers who remember their favorite meals there.

In one of the many stories Peter relayed about the Soo Theatre, he recalled, “I loved going to the theater when I was growing up. You know the movie ran all day on Saturday. One time I watched a western at least three times. When I finally left, I’ll never forget the sight in the lobby. There was my dad in his white apron and his hands on his hips glaring at me in front of the crowd coming in for the evening movie. I was one embarrassed young man.”

Soo Theatre Project has honored the Gianakura Family with a display of photos and memorabilia in the area that the family restaurant occupied for nearly 60 years. Peter and Georgia provided the wonderful pictures of the café and the former candy stores. Thanks go to Marian MacLeod for sparking the idea for the memory wall, to Bill Gerrish for lending his design expertise, to Colleen Arbic and Personal Touch for donating some of the materials, and to Sault Realism for creating the finished replica photos. The “Gianakura corner” is adjacent to the refinished original framed mirror that was behind the diner counter. The mirror was found under newer generation wall coverings and brought back to its former beauty by Fran Hoholik.

Stop by on Saturday to see this tribute to the Gianakuras and pick up a copy of Peter’s new book. As Chris Roll says in her review on the back cover of the book, “An American Café is a book filled with the richness of small-town life over the course of most of the 20th century.”

Composite of International Idol Week One Contestants and Judges

Week Two of the Soo Theatre Project’s International Idol has expanded to ten contestants! Three more Idol hopefuls have been added to this unique vocal contest. This competition is an adrenaline ride for the contestants, who have to hold their own on the Soo Theatre stage, performing in front of the judges, family, friends, and devoted community members.

Lake Street Studio in Brimley, owned and operated by Soo Theatre’s own Taylor Brugman, is donating studio time for the three winning contestants. The International Idol third place winner will receive an award of $100 of studio time, runner-up $200 of studio time, and first place $500 of studio time at Brugman’s Lake Street Studio.

Week Three of International Idol is just around the corner. Sign-up is complete and the ten contestants have been selected. There may be some new challenges compared to last year’s competition… Come see what happens!

The remaining events of the International Idol 2009 Vocal Competition Series take place Sundays, June 21, June 28, and July 5 at 7:00 p.m. at the Soo Theatre. There's Still Time to Sign Up for International Idol 2009!

Sunday, June 7th at 7:00 p.m. on the Soo Theatre stage saw the first round of International Idol 2009. Seven local talents, from both sides of the Saint Mary's River and ranging in age from 12 to 82, began the vocal competition.

The contestants are not only judged on their vocal abilities but also on their stage presence, originality, timing, clarity, interpretation, and pitch accuracy. Local musicians Dennis Brooks and "Gentleman George" Snider make up two of three members of the judging panel. Trisha Wells is the third judge. A graduate of DePauw University with a Bachelor of Music degree in Vocal Performance, Ms. Wells is the female lead in the Soo Theatre’s upcoming production of Oliver! The Musical.

Jennifer Compo and All Good Soundz Entertainment is once again providing musical accompaniment for the contestants. The winners will receive studio time at Lake Street Studio, Brimley's waterfront recording studio. The Grand Prize is $500 studio time, Second Prize is $200 studio time, and Third Prize is $100 studio time at Lake Street Studio.

If you love singing and performing, this is the competition for you! International Idol is still accepting registration for new contestants. Everyone participating must prepare two songs. International Idol Competition Returns June 7: Do You Have What It Takes?

Once again, Soo Theatre Project, Inc. & All Good Soundz Present... International Idol!

Returning for a much-anticipated second season on June 7, International Idol is American Idol meets Rock Star: INXS. Contestants will be judged—sometimes harshly—based on technique, presence, audience rapport, and that magical quality that makes a great performer.

This is not a vocal-quality-only, Karaoke-style competition. We are looking for the best Front person in the Twin Sault Area. Own the song, stage, audience. Do you have what it takes?

Competition starts at 7:00 p.m. on June 7th and contestants compete every Sunday until July 5th when one is crowned as the International Idol. And, yes, there will be challenges, surprises, and eliminations along the way.

Contestants have until the second week (Sunday, June 14) to sign up.

Grand Prize is $500 studio time at Lake Street Studio in Brimley. Second Prize is $200 studio time and Third Prize is $100 studio time, also at Lake Street Studio.

Andy McKee Update

When Andy McKee was not able to make his scheduled duo show with Don Ross at the Soo Theatre last July, he said he would reschedule the show for late November or early December. And he said “To those of you who hold a ticket for the show and come to the makeup date, I will present to you a 3 song disc called July 3 Sault Ste. Marie…”

So what’s happening?

The Soo Theatre Project has been working to try to find a show date that works but we have not been successful as yet. We were hoping to get Don and Andy back playing together here this summer, because without heat, our theatre is closed during the colder months (October to May). But as you may know from the duo’s website, after touring together for most of 2008, Don and Andy are focusing on solo performances in 2009. Further, Andy is on tour in Europe through July this year.

But there’s good news!

Andy’s last world tour date is July 25 in the UK (andymckee.com). He has signed a deal with a new record company, Razor & Tie (razorandtie.com), and he will be coming off the road after two and a half years to take some time to do a new album. In June he’ll be in New York City to record an EP with the new company that will be released via iTunes only. But, to honor his pledge, he’s going to give the Soo Theatre signed copies of this new EP on CD for exclusive distribution to the Soo Theatre concert ticketholders. So if you have your ticket to the July 3 concert at the Soo Theatre, you’ll be part of a very select group to ever have this EP. This CD will be personally signed by Andy McKee to commemorate the missed Soo date. Please note: this EP is coming out to the rest of the world as a digital-only piece at the time of release - so on a good faith basis please keep this as your personal physical copy (no reselling please) and as a very special thank you directly from Andy.

June 6: A Table for Two Kicks Off the Summer at the Soo Theatre

A Table for Two will be kicking off the 2009 Season in the Soo Theatre on June 6 at 7:30 p.m. This terrific show features the Lock Cities Chorus of Sweet Adelines and the Northland Barbershop Chorus. The two choruses are repeating (with a few additions) part of the annual show that the men’s chorus held in April in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. Each of these choruses boasts members from both sides of the St. Mary’s River. The show will benefit the Soo Theatre Project.

Each chorus presents a wide variety of songs in traditional four-part barbershop harmony, and they join together for a rousing musical duel singing “Anything You Can Do We Can Do Better.”

The script for A Table for Two was written by the directors of the two choruses, Judy Hendrickson and Bob Shami, and Northland Chorus member Steve Patterson. Steve will be playing the part of Gaston LeBlanc (aka Gus White), the maître d’ of a nightclub that is sponsoring a speed dating session. Enter the two choruses—the women very excited at the prospect of meeting someone, the men very nervous.

Tickets are $15 for adults, $10 for students, and are available at the Soo Theatre Box Office or at the door.

You will enjoy this evening of song and comedy with as many as 60 singers and actors on stage. Be sure to join in the fun and help support the Soo Theatre Project.

The Soo Theatre Project is partnering with United Way of the EUP and LSSU for their upcoming Disney Dance STARS production. The shows begin at 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, May 15 and 16 at the LSSU Fine Arts Center. Soo Theatre is sharing a portion of their proceeds with United Way.
